In rural areas, reducing the distance that people have to travel to collect water is a major factor in improving their productivity and livelihoods. Women frequently collect water for their family. In areas where there are no water points this can mean hours of additional work a day – time which might be spent with children or earning extra income. RiPPLE 2007
